Friends of Castle Green have taken over the lease of The Pavilion on Castle Green on Midsummer Day. Herefordshire Council has agreed to lease the Georgian building on Castle Green to the community group for 25 years. The group want to restore The Pavilion to reflect its historic past and recreate it for use as a sustainable community asset. Amanda Attfield, Chair, said the group was absolutely thrilled with the transfer. “As a group, we have worked very hard over the last four years to prove to Herefordshire Council that we are a sustainable community interest company that has the future of Castle Green at its heart” she said. “We’re delighted that the council has recognised the dedication of the local community and trusted us with the future of the Pavilion and the surrounding area. We are now committed to realising some of the aspirations of the residents of Herefordshire for this beautiful park in the heart of the city”.
Council Project Officer, Dave Tristram, also said they were extremely pleased. He said “During the process FOCG showed themselves to be a very capable and resourceful group of people with the interests of their community at heart and it is reassuring that this splendid historical building will be well looked after and utilised for the public good. We’d like to offer both our continuing support and to wish them all the very best for the future”
The community group has an excellent record of success rate in grant applications. Last year it received £10,000 from Awards for All to consult the community on the future of Castle Green and the surrounding area.. It has also recently received £4,000 from Welcome to Our Future, allowing the restoration of two original sash windows, preserving the heritage of the Grade II listed Pavilion building.
